Reviews of Lightbinders Publications

DARWIN Multimedia CD-ROM -- The Collective Works of Charles Darwin on CD-ROM (2nd Edition)

"L ightbinders’ second edition of 'Darwin,' their CD-ROM product, is a jewel...with a biographical dictionary, a chronology, and an extensive Darwin bibliography. 'Darwin' is comprehensive and thoughtfully compiled.

"'Darwin' is seamlessly put together. Tables of contents run along the left frame of each screen, making it easy to move within the text of each work. The browser function enables the user to find the occurrences of terms or names in a single text or within the scope of the entire compact disc. One can then move through the selected text from occurrence to occurrence of the specified term. Hypertext links to the biographical dictionary enable the user to quickly identify people if importance in Darwin’s life. The numerous illustrations, maps, drawings, and photographs (later additions) may be enlarged for better viewing. I was particularly fond of the buttons located under some illustrations enabling the listener to hear the calls of the Galapagos birds."
Martha S. Felts, (Catalog Librarian, College of Charleston, SC)

"I found the design of the compact disc enabled me to quickly research Darwin-related questions...I would not hesitate to suggest to my students that they use this CD to research a wide variety of subjects."
Michael W. Colgan, (Associate Professor, Geology, College of Charleston, SC)

"This remarkable disk is an integrated compilation of the major works of Charles Darwin [and] a selection of many of the lesser-known works...Never before have these rare titles been presented together, let alone integrated by extensive cross-reference hyperlinks."

European Sociobiological Society Newsletter, May 1997

"This edition of Darwin will probably not be a moneymaker for the publisher: It costs only $49.95.....Four years ago, a CD-ROM like this would have cost hundreds of dollars."

Dean Hancock, HMS Beagle Net Magazine, June 13, 1997

"This CD-ROM is a must for those interested in the lifetime work of Charles Darwin....most are out of print in book form."

"The attention to detail and versatility of this electronic version of Darwin's works make this CD of great value to both students and scholars alike...it places his activities within a larger context by including significant social and political events of the day."

Norman Desmarais, Electronic Resources Review, June 1997

"My frustration in communicating the richness of this compilation is perhaps best expressed in Darwin's own words....'This sketch is most imperfect; but in so short a space I cannot make it better.'"

Richard Milner, Natural History, May 1997
